Davits – Helpful Questions when looking for a Davit
Todd Hurley of Hurley Marine explains how the right davit makes loading your dinghy a breeze.

What are the benefits of bringing a tender aboard using a davit?

Hurley: Instead of towing a dinghy behind your craft, you easily can bring it aboard to eliminate performance-robbing drag. The low-profile storage position on Hurley Davits provides exceptional stern visibility.

What factors should be taken into consideration when choosing a davit?

Hurley: Platform and dinghy measurements, as well as weight, should be kept in mind. We advise choosing the best davit for your boat and letting that dictate your choice of dinghy. Remember that dinghy size and weight may impact trim, performance and the structural integrity of your vessel. While some boat owners get around this by towing their dinghy, it’s neither safe nor practical.

Are davits hard to install?

Hurley: Hurley Davits are easily mounted with simple hand tools, even when the vessel is in the water.

Is it difficult to remove a […]

Online Dinghy Davit Worksheet
Dinghy Davit Worksheet – When you are looking to order a Dinghy Davit, the first step is filling out our Online Dinghy Davit Worksheet. We do not keep measurements on file based on vessel or dinghies types, because all combinations are different.  We absolutely want to make sure the Davit system we recommend is going to work with your set up.
We do not keep measurements on file based on vessel or dinghy types . . .

The online Dinghy Davit worksheet will ask for Platform Length, Width and Depth. We ask how high the platform sits off the water because the higher the distance, the harder the retrieval.  As for the dinghy, we need to know the length and the beam of the dinghy.  This will tell us how much of the dinghy will be able to sit on the platform and which size mounts will work.  Also […]

Dinghy Davit

By |April 2nd, 2014|Categories: Tips & Techniques|Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , |Comments Off on Dinghy Davit

Selecting a Dinghy Davit

One of the pleasures of cruising is anchoring out at your favorite gunk hole and launching the dinghy and taking in the sights of the area or visiting other boats.  It’s a great way to meet new friends.  But if your dinghy is not very accessible or difficult to launch, you will not likely use it often.

All tenders require adequate storage, a dinghy davit.  Towing is not always practical and can be risky in bad weather.  The same goes for on deck storage;  a heavy wind and you may lose it.  But if you properly setup your boat with the proper dinghy davit system, your dinghy will provide trouble-free service.

However before you select your dinghy davit system, you’ll need to choose the right dinghy for your boating needs.  Do you prefer a rigid dinghy or inflatable?  Remember punctures are very common with inflatables.  Where will it […]

Tips for Maintaining Navigation Lights

By |March 27th, 2014|Categories: Tips & Techniques|Tags: , , , , , , , |Comments Off on Tips for Maintaining Navigation Lights

Lights:  Electrical contacts are the most vulnerable contacts on your boat.
The connections inside your navigation lights live a ruff life!  Outside the light is always getting sprayed with sea water regularly, they eventually end up with badly corroded contacts at the light bulbs.  Gold plateed terminals are the answer.

Gold is one of the most noble metals we know of and it resists corrosion naturally.  They are still finding gold artifacts at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea that are in really nice shape considering their exposure to sea water for centuries!

So, when shopping for new nav light fixtures, and sooner or later you will be, make sure they have top quality terminals.  It’s just one more way to raise the bar as well as the service life and maintenance intervals for your navigation lights.

Tips for Maintaining Navigation Lights

Clean the contacts of both the bulb and the fixture regularly, using fine […]
